Job Description:

Crisis Respite Recovery Specialist


In the short-term crisis respite setting, the Recovery Specialist is responsible for instilling hope, supporting wellness; and demonstrating that recovery is real and attainable. Recovery Specialists help guests explore their personal goals and engage them in community and social events using compassion, trauma-informed techniques, and peer support.


* Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, or college-level academic work in related field strongly preferred; or High School diploma with relevant work experience/knowledge-base of mental health recovery

* Personal experience as a recipient of mental health and/or chemical addiction services with two years of successful recovery is required

* Able to interact professionally and effectively with staff and guests

* Experience/general understanding of documentation procedures including electronic recordkeeping

* Working knowledge of issues facing persons affected by mental illness and chemical dependency

* Understanding of and ease with dealing with individuals in crisis

* Familiarity with community supports and Federal, State, and Local services and systems * Qualify for and complete New York State Peer Specialist Certification within six months of hire http://nypeerspecialist.org * Ability to abide by the NYPSCB Code of Ethical Conduct http://nypeerspecialist.org

* Approval by New York State Justice Center via fingerprinting and criminal background check is required

* Must be able to drive with a valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to MHAST insurance carrier

* Provide assistance, support, and advocacy to individuals in crisis

* Help individuals clarify problems and identify the need for change or improvement

* Assist individuals with setting goals based on their individual preferences

* Model wellness and recovery while helping individuals to identify interventions they can implement working toward their own wellness and recovery goals

* Promote empowerment through meaningful activities and discussions using selective self-disclosure

* Utilize wellness tools, such as a WRAP, and other problem solving techniques

* Assist individuals in making community connections based on their preferences and needs

* Help maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment in the respite house

* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and documentation of services; provide and maintain documentation of the individual’s progress and operations of the respite house

* Demonstrate teamwork among co-workers

* Communicate effectively with community contacts

* Demonstrate ease with working with a diverse population

* Ability to meet individuals where they are in life and promoting goal setting and supporting progress toward those goals

* Flexibility with work schedule, with evenings, nights, and weekend shifts required

* Treat all guests and staff with dignity, courtesy, and respect

* Occasionally ascends/descends stairs

Job Description:


* Bachelor’s degree in child & family studies, community mental health, counseling, education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, recreation, recreational therapy, rehabilitation, social work, sociology, or speech and hearing with minimum of 2 years employment and/or volunteer experience in human services; OR a Bachelor’s level education or higher in any field with five years of experience working directly with persons with behavioral health diagnoses.

* Experience in the field of Managed Care and Medicaid programing preferred.

* Willingness and ability to work with individuals of varying socioeconomic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

* Familiarity and working knowledge of community resources.

* Ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure and respond appropriately in crisis situations.

* A valid NYS Driver’s License and a driving record acceptable to MHAST’s auto insurance carrier.

* Clear a NYS Justice Center criminal background check. (Failure to do so will automatically disqualify a candidate from this position) RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct Service (90%):

* Provide varying levels of care management services on behalf of consumers with chronic illnesses.

* Complete individualized health assessment/reassessment inclusive of medical/behavioral/rehabilitative and long term care and social service needs.

* Maintain accurate case records as per New York State Department of Health/Medicaid standards.

* Coordinate and refer to treating physicians to assure that services are provided and to assure changes in treatment or changes in medical conditions are addressed.

* Follow-up post-discharge with client and/or family to ensure that goals/needs are met.

* Develop/review/revise the individual’s plan of care with client/family to ensure that the plan reflects individual’s preferences, education, support for self-management.

* Advocate for services and assist with scheduling of needed services.

* Arrange transportation to medical, housing, and entitlement appointments.

* Conduct visits to home, work, jail, or other in-patient facilities.

* Provide supportive counseling and crisis intervention as needed.

* Conduct client outreach and engagement activities to assess ongoing emerging needs and to promote continuity of care and improved health outcomes.

* Provide information and referral. Indirect (10%):

* Complete proper documentation including progress notes and care plans in timely manner.

* Submit billing information compliant with Medicaid regulations.

* Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

* Participate in regular case reviews with staff and supervisor.

* Report pertinent information to program director and/or agency administration.

* Attend agency and community meetings.

* Perform other reasonably related duties as required. REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Sr. Care Coordinator

The Mental Health Association is recruiting new interpreters!

The Mental Health Interpreter Program (MHIP) collaborates with numerous local non-profits, educational institutions and hospitals in order to assure that EVERYONE receives the services they require and deserve. Appointments are requested and then offered to interpreters to help clients by being present at counseling, educational or medical appointments.

  • Are you bilingual and fluent in both languages?
  • Do you possess good communication skills?
  • Do you have an interest in working in health care, education and/or supporting accessibility to mental health services?
  • Are you interested in supporting local constituents in receiving services?
  • Would you be interested in earning $35 an hour for each appointment?
  • Do you have a passion for working with diverse populations including immigrants and refugees?

In order to become a certified interpreter for MHIP, the process would be:

  • Send MHIP application and availability sheet.
  • Complete an interview.
  • Attend the training series that is broke into six 3 hour sessions. Upon completion, you would be certified throughan evidenced based curriculum from the Department of Health and Human Services. The topics covered include: program expectations, American values, cultural and linguistic competency, psychiatric terminology, the challenges refugees and immigrants face.
  • Be hired at Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier.
  • Cover appointments that fit your schedule.
  • Attend a quarterly staff meeting.
